Whether your current character uses a bow, a knife, or a hammer, you’ll always be able to execute precise attacks and time your moves perfectly. The controls in Children of Morta are intuitive and fairly precise. This makes you pay attention to different enemy types and learn about their behavior because there are entirely new decisions to make every time you die and you can’t just keep guessing or hacking away at your enemies. The dungeons are procedurally generated, so you’ll have to start over in a completely new dungeon if you die. Even if you’re an experienced RPG player, chances are the hordes of enemies are still going to be a bit much for you from time to time. The dungeons are the place where you’ll have to do a lot of grinding. Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll descend into the dungeons to find ancient items that can help awaken the spirits who can protect your world from Corruption.

You can choose between the family patriarch and his five children, all of whom have different abilities that will influence your combat tactics. Gameplay 4/5Ĭhildren of Morta gets you pretty invested in the six playable characters early on, with numerous cutscenes displaying interactions between family members. The family home, which acts like a kind of base you keep coming back to throughout the game, is beautifully drawn and a joy to explore.

Pixel art graphics are not easy to animate, and yet every animation and transition in the game looks gorgeous.
